where we worked

Birmingham, in a client’s working office, and then in locations around the city to various schools.

challenges

This particular task involved moving a large amount of office furniture from a number of floors and then distributing this furniture to various schools around Birmingham. We faced plenty of challenges on this project. The offices themselves were high-security areas, meaning we had to be escorted around the building whilst working. We also had to navigate using the lifts within strict time-frames. On top of this, we were working alongside other contractors, meaning there was always pressure on the lifts (when they were working) and the loading bay.

how we managed

Our first task was clear, we needed to clear the floor of all furniture and other items as quickly as possible. Our client was to have their floor refurbished, and it was our job to remove this furniture and distribute it to schools around Birmingham and Leicester.

When it came to delivering to the schools, timing was also crucial, as we had to ensure we delivered within strict timeframes, usually whilst the pupils were having their lessons, so that the outdoor areas weren’t being used while on breaktimes.

Once the old furniture had been either distributed or recycled, and the floor refurbished, we delivered and installed replacement furniture from another site. While this furniture was generally of great quality, it was used, so we had to check each item carefully on delivery to identify any defects; any found were repaired by us. Once installed, we cleaned down each piece of furniture, ready for our client’s use.

The Results

The project in its entirety spanned several months, on and off, and we completed 4 floors in total. We were happy that we were able re-home plenty of the furniture from this office rather than sending it to be recycled. Many of the pieces that hadn’t been donated to schools were given away to avoid the need for recycling
